Police warning after spate of lead and metal thefts

Police are warning people to keep an eye out for bogus workmen following a spate of thefts of metal and lead in Essex.

In the latest incident, 10 metres of lead flashing was removed from a site in Merlin Way, North Weald

A few days earlier 150 metres of underground lead junction cable was stolen from Ongar while in Saffron Walden,
pedestrians, cyclists and motorists have been asked to be cautious after a number of gully and manhole covers were
  stolen.
Twenty-two gully covers, used with French drains, were stolen from Great Chesterford last Tuesday and two metal
manhole covers were stolen from Newport on June 15.

Inspector Kevin Wakefield said: “This is a reckless crime, which potentially endangers members of the public travelling
along these roads and will cost taxpayers a significant sum of money in paying for the covers to be replaced.”

“If you see people working on rural roads overnight without any clear identification on their vehicles or clothing, or

otherwise behaving suspiciously, please call Essex Police on 999 so that we can investigate whether they are
  legitimate or not.”

Please call 0800 015 56 90 and speak to Lisa for more information.
